Grant Overview

Economic Barriers Facing Black Women in New York

New York is home to a diverse population; however, Black women in the state face significant economic barriers compared to their counterparts. According to the National Women’s Law Center, Black women in New York earn only 64 cents for every dollar earned by white men. This wage gap contributes to a myriad of health disparities, particularly in access to quality healthcare resources. With the state’s high cost of living, many Black women are left without adequate financial means to seek necessary medical care and support.

In New York, various groups, from small business owners to single mothers, are directly impacted by these economic challenges. Many Black women juggle multiple jobs and family responsibilities, making it considerably difficult to prioritize their health. Health disparities faced by this demographic are often compounded by systemic issues, including inadequate representation within the healthcare system and cultural barriers that prevent them from accessing necessary services.

To address these challenges, the Black Women’s Health Coalition aims to establish a system-building initiative that prioritizes healthcare coordination specifically for Black women in New York. By tailoring outreach and education programs, the coalition intends to bridge the gap between these women and the healthcare resources they need. Through collaboration with healthcare providers, the Coalition aims to create programs that cater specifically to the needs of this demographic, thus improving overall health outcomes.

Funding from the state is crucial in deploying these initiatives effectively. By prioritizing efforts to enhance healthcare access and educational outreach, the coalition can ensure that Black women receive adequate information about their health and the available resources. This funding will not only help establish a network of supportive healthcare resources but also facilitate workshops and community education events to directly address the unique challenges Black women face in accessing quality healthcare services.

Ultimately, this initiative is a step towards addressing the long-standing disparities in healthcare access that have plagued Black women in New York. By focusing on economic barriers and healthcare education, the coalition hopes to shift the narrative around health equity in the state, ensuring a more inclusive approach to healthcare access and support.
