Summary

A grant program is available to support the vitality of local creative ecosystems and foster socially engaged art. The opportunity is open to individual artists, small arts groups, cultural entrepreneurs, researchers, and nonprofit arts organizations whose work is primarily based in Brooklyn (Kings County). Some awards may reach up to $10,000 per grant. Projects may be funded for general operating support, project expenses, or a mix of both.

In addition, there are smaller grant streams which typically offer awards in the range of $2,500 to $5,000. These grants are intended to foster local arts projects that engage audiences in Brooklyn, strengthen community participation, and build capacity of small creative organizations or artists working in partnership with nonprofits.

Applicants must propose activities that occur within a defined calendar year and demonstrate how the work directly benefits Brooklyn communities. Full‑time students are generally ineligible for some streams, although part‑time students may qualify. In certain categories, unincorporated collectives or individual artists may require a fiscal sponsor or community partner to act on their behalf. Some funding streams restrict eligibility if the applicant has sought other public arts funds.

Grant recipients benefit from flexible support that can cover both programmatic and capacity building needs. The funds are intended to empower artists to experiment, deepen community engagement, and support structural change through arts practice. The program is selective and emphasizes proposals that combine artistic excellence with social justice, equity, and sustainability goals. Grants are awarded following a competitive review process in defined cycles each year.
