Summary

This grant opportunity provides support for arts, culture, history, and heritage projects as well as arts education initiatives. It is designed for both nonprofit organizations and individual artists, including unincorporated groups and collectives. Funding is available to strengthen creative programming, increase access to the arts, and encourage community engagement across a variety of disciplines.

Eligible uses of funds include artist fees, space or equipment rental, supplies and materials, marketing and outreach, project-related administration, and in-state travel directly tied to a funded project. Some opportunities also support leadership development, organizational capacity-building, and succession planning for eligible nonprofits. The funding is not intended for ongoing general operating expenses, capital improvements, or fundraising events, and large permanent equipment purchases are excluded.

Grant amounts vary depending on the program. Smaller “micro” grants provide up to $1,000, supporting projects at an introductory level or offering quick assistance. Larger awards can reach up to $5,000 and are available to nonprofit organizations for community arts programs, arts education projects with schools or community partners, and targeted capacity-building initiatives. Individual artists are also eligible to receive up to $5,000 for original commissions or educational programming, though some awards at the higher level may require fiscal sponsorship.

Applicants are encouraged to present projects that promote broad public access, contribute to community vitality, and expand opportunities for creative participation. Activities should demonstrate measurable benefits, whether through new audience development, enriched cultural offerings, or stronger organizational infrastructure. Projects are expected to occur within a defined time frame, typically one year, with required reporting and documentation to ensure accountability.

This opportunity is available to applicants located within six counties of Central New York: Cortland, Herkimer, Madison, Oneida, Onondaga, and Oswego.
